I get it, movie tie ins are hard. You’ve got a development timeline dictated by by an unobservable force. Expectations that are already lower than a kid who gets all of their candy stolen before they get a chance to eat any of it. The only thing you can do sometimes is get your friends and family and hope that they can help you through these tortuous times.

And then a new kid shows up, going on and on about how someone bigger and badder is going to come around and eat your whole planet. And the new kid is cooler than you because he has a surfboard. And he’s shiney and possibly made of metal? Yeah things are getting weird.

Helping me wrangle all of this insanity is Gary Jones from Divergent Comics. Which is a good thing too because I definitely needed a second opinion about some things here and Gary brought a nice calm perspective to counteract my annoyance that until very recently we just couldn’t get a good Fantastic Four movie no matter how hard we tried. And I really needed him to help keep my thoughts about the movie from staining my thoughts on the game.

Get those forks ready, pitch or otherwise, because I know this one is going to leave a few people hungry for more.

In Episode 43 of Tales From The Brick, Jon (8 Bit Bricks) sits down with Greg Avola, creator of Brickd, a social app designed to help LEGO fans track their collections, share their building experiences, and connect with other builders. Greg shares how his childhood love of LEGO Pirates and underwater themes eventually gave way to a dark age, until receiving the LEGO Disney Up house brought him back into the hobby. Now, he's sharing that passion with his own children while building a growing community of LEGO enthusiasts.

Greg takes us through the story behind Brickd, from his experience creating the popular beer-tracking app Untappd to realizing that LEGO fans could benefit from a similar way to document and share their experiences. Inspired while building the LEGO Home Alone house, Greg wanted to create something that captured the entire building process, including the hidden details and Easter eggs that often get overlooked once a set is finished. Since launching in February 2024, Brickd has grown to more than 35,000 users worldwide.

The conversation explores Brickd's features, including collection management, wishlists, build progress tracking, community discussions, set ratings, and the ability to share custom MOCs. Greg explains how users can document their builds bag by bag, discover other builders with similar interests, import existing collections from spreadsheets and other services, and even use AI-powered image recognition to identify LEGO sets. He also discusses the app's leaderboards, achievement badges, privacy controls, and why he wants Brickd to complement the building experience rather than keep people glued to their phones.

Greg also shares some of the latest additions to Brickd, including the ability to photograph an entire LEGO collection and automatically identify multiple sets, estimate collection values, and search for sets using natural language. Along the way, he talks about the generosity of the LEGO community, the challenges of keeping up with an ever-growing number of new releases, and what it's like developing an app as a one-person operation while listening to feedback from thousands of users.

Bruce Banner has the worst anger management plan in recorded history. Step one: don’t get angry. There is no step two, because the world is full of slow Wi-Fi, hold music, and a military that answers “please stop chasing me” by chasing him harder. It always ends the same way: one enormous green man, one miraculously intact pair of purple pants, and a repair bill the city will still be paying off in 2060.

This episode is about The Incredible Hulk, the video game spun out of the 2008 film. It’s a story about a man who just wants a quiet life, a decent cup of coffee, and a cure, and who keeps getting interrupted by helicopters. His entire personality is a mood swing with a gym membership, and he is somehow still the most reasonable person in any room that contains Ross.

Returning to the show to take the green wheel is Russell Moran of Kaiju ComicCast. Russell spends his days with some of the biggest monsters ever to flatten a skyline, which makes him the one guest who won’t flinch when a city block gets treated like a chew toy. That gives us the big question: is the Hulk a superhero, or a kaiju with a great publicist and a gamma-radiation origin story? Russell is here to rule on it.

Keep a spare pair of stretchy pants handy, don’t make us angry in the comments, and let’s find out whether this one leaves you roaring or just leaves a very large hole in the wall.

In Episode 42 of Tales From The Brick, Jon (8 Bit Bricks) sits down with Adrian Drake, longtime AFOL, legendary SHIP builder, and the creator behind BrickFrenzy. Adrian shares how growing up in Germany surrounded by LEGO sparked a lifelong passion for building, and how the release of LEGO Star Wars in 1999 helped turn that passion into decades of creating some of the most ambitious LEGO models in the AFOL community.

Adrian takes us back to the earliest days of the online LEGO community, from Usenet and LUGNET to attending BrickFest in 2001, when conventions were small gatherings of just a few hundred builders. He talks about helping pioneer the SHIP building movement, contributing to the original Moonbase Standard, and watching the LEGO community grow from a handful of dedicated builders into the massive worldwide fandom it is today.

The conversation explores some of Adrian's most recognizable creations, including his massive Serenity from Firefly, an eight-foot-wide Deep Space Nine, a life-size six-foot-tall Bender from Futurama, and his latest project, the Highwind from Final Fantasy VII. Adrian shares what goes into designing these enormous builds, from engineering internal structures strong enough to support thousands of bricks to figuring out how to transport creations that can take years to complete. He also reveals why Bender once had several bottles of whiskey stored inside his chest and what happened when a fellow builder accidentally knocked off his arm at a convention.

Along the way, Adrian discusses building with his family, the friendships formed at LEGO conventions, and why he prefers creating for the enjoyment rather than chasing awards. He also offers advice for anyone looking to tackle their first large-scale MOC, explaining why the best way to improve is to study other builders, experiment with techniques, and simply start building.

Episode 260 opens with Parker, Fred, and Allan celebrating another milestone and immediately campaigning for help. The Black Lincoln Collective is once again nominated for a local podcast award, and after winning the previous two years, the guys are officially chasing the three-peat.

That means sizing up the competition.

The crew runs through several fellow nominees, including a church podcast, an old nemesis, real estate shows, a Reverend David Tipton, and a podcast hosted by an investor-attorney-Brazilian-jiu-jitsu black belt and a bodybuilder/music artist. That last combination is enough to make Parker briefly reconsider the usual “talk shit about the competitors” strategy.

The general campaign message is simple: vote BLC, ignore everyone else, and maybe don’t antagonize the jiu-jitsu guy.

Fred then brings some genuinely good news: after previously missing out because tickets sold out too quickly, his upgraded internet connection finally pays off and he lands tickets to see Dave Chappelle in Charlotte. The guys talk ticket prices, making a full day of the trip, potentially golfing, staying overnight, possibly hitting a casino, and Fred’s history of seeing Chappelle before and after Chappelle’s Show became a phenomenon.

Parker follows that with his own personal update: he is officially back in the gym.

The real selling point isn’t fitness. It’s childcare.

Parker discovers a gym where his kids can hang out in a surprisingly elaborate children’s area with game consoles, a theater, a play structure, basketball, and staff supervision while he exercises. What begins as a fitness plan quickly sounds more like Parker has discovered affordable short-term childcare with complimentary weight machines.

He explains that he is trying to repair his knee, back, hip, and essentially every other part of his body that has started making noises. That means using machines he associates more with glute and hip work, including abductors and glute kickbacks.

Naturally, he decides the correct solution is to add increasingly dramatic grunts, poses, and “look back at it” energy to every rep.

The conversation shifts into gym memberships and how notoriously difficult some companies make cancellation. That becomes a broader discussion of contracts, legal jargon, companies burying unfavorable terms in the fine print, and the idea that a company can do nearly anything as long as somewhere in the agreement it effectively says:

“Lube is not included.”

Which evolves into the legal phrase nobody learned in law school:

Lubricus Not Includicas.

The gym discussion continues with Parker becoming irritated by someone occupying a machine without actually doing any reps while waiting for a friend to teach her how to use it. He and another gym member silently bond over their mutual frustration before both eventually abandon the exercise.

After the break, the show revisits last week’s most important guest.

The Business Manatee is alive.

Charles Mangrove III returns to publicly address the dramatic ending of Episode 259. He says the North Florida-South Georgia fish markets had tanked, he lost a great deal of money, and his previous behavior came during an extremely low point.

The show briefly makes an explicit point that suicide is not a joke and that people experiencing suicidal thoughts should seek help. Charles says he did exactly that, got help, spent time recovering, and is now doing much better.

Even better, the fish markets have bounced back.

Charles has apparently made all his money back and claims he “pulled himself up by his flipper straps,” immediately creating another potential episode title.

That launches an on-air debate between “Flipper Straps” and “Lubricus Not Includicas.” Business Manatee solves the problem using timeless business strategy: throw everything against the wall and see what sticks.

Charles then offers a fresh investment idea: GameStop. His reasoning involves executive stock purchases, “moon tickets,” and the kind of financial confidence that makes Parker question whether the Business Manatee learned anything from last week.

Before leaving, Parker asks Charles for help with another economic crisis: expensive organic half-and-half creamer repeatedly spoiling weeks before its printed expiration date. Business Manatee admits dairy is outside his North Florida-South Georgia fish-market expertise and provides almost no useful answer.

After Charles leaves, the show pivots into health news.

Parker brings up reports about drug-resistant Shigella, which the episode describes as an increasingly difficult-to-treat bacterial infection spreading in part through sexual contact, particularly among men who have sex with men.

That sets off exactly the kind of discussion BLC listeners would expect.

The guys try to understand fecal-oral transmission, why Shigella historically spread in daycares, how sexual behavior can transmit it, and which parts of the human body should remain strictly exit-only.

The explanation then transforms into a full airlock analogy involving astronauts, facilities, alien invasions, dinosaurs, inner chambers, outer chambers, and whether a person can technically be “inside” without being inside.
