Noted tonight by many including this Toonami News Twitter account, and confirmed by Jason DeMarco, the Adult Swim website’s TV paper schedule got a change either yesterday or today, with one notable addition (besides the fact that the network’s airing the Black Dynamite film September 2nd at 11:30PM): new anime! The first after the two new series from Toonami’s premier night.
Deadman Wonderland is scheduled to wrap up on the 11th of August, so instead of beginning a second go-around, the Toonami block is getting a new addition. Say hi to Samurai 7, premiering August 18th at 12:30.
Airing in Japan in 2004, the series is animated by the studio Gonzo and is based on Akira Kurosawa’s 1954 film Seven Samurai. The show is about a village named Kanna, where during annual harvests, bandits come to rob the people, steal the harvested rice, and kidnap women and children. The village’s elder chooses to hire samurai to ward off the bandits and keep the land safe, paying them in the only thing they can: rice from their harvests. The village’s water priestess, her sister, and a villager set off to find samurai who can help them, and upon doing so, they are taught to fight so that they may wage war on the bandits, and those who make the bandits do what they do. The show is also partially a mech show– I believe the bandits use robots to terrorize the village. Sounds cool.
If the show sounds familiar, like it’s been on American television before, that’s because it has: it’s aired on IFC, Animania HD, and FUNimation Network in the past.
The show will premier August 18th at 12:30 on Toonami.
