This week on Twitter… filmmaker, producer, and podcaster, Kevin Smith responded to a fan’s tweet regarding the animated Clerks series…

In the early 2000s, Smith introduced a whole new audience (myself included) to his 1994 cult hit, Clerks by transferring the concept into animated form. Much to the disdain of Clerks/Smith fans (and because ABC is terrible with keeping shows on air,) Clerks: The Animated Series only lasted two episodes. A year later, Miramax (production company for Clerks) produced a full DVD of the two aired episodes and four unaired, plus special features as well as commentary… some of which included Smith and company poking fun at Family Guy and Seth MacFarlane for having a “more successful” series.

In the mid to late 2000s, the full series was put into syndication on Comedy Central, along with cancelled series such as Undergrads, The Critic, and The Tick (mostly in an attempt to start their own late night animated block to compete with [adult swim].) Clerks eventually found a home on [adult swim] and is run occasionally on the network… whenever the programming heads feel they want to. Prior to the release of Clerks 2, there was talk of developing a movie version of Clerks: TAS (tentatively titled Clerks: Sell Out) which never materialized.

With the recent revivals of Family Guy and Futurama, as well as the on and off rumored revival of The Oblongs, it would be nice to see a show like Clerks revived for both old fans as well as newbies who may not have seen either the movies or the original animated series. Considering Swim still (occasionally) runs the original 6 episodes, it would be interesting to see if they make a run at a possible new series… or if they let it go to Comedy Central like they did with Futurama.
