Adult Swim has set the table for its next original: Get Jiro premieres Saturday, October 3 at midnight ET/PT as part of the Toonami block, streaming the next day on HBO Max. A red band trailer dropped alongside the announcement (below, and it earns the red band).

Based on the New York Times bestselling graphic novel by Anthony Bourdain and Joel Rose (published through DC’s Vertigo imprint, with artwork by Langdon Foss and Alé Garza), the series comes from Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios. The premise, in the network’s words: a post-apocalyptic, near-future Los Angeles where culinary culture reigns supreme and the world’s most powerful figures are chefs. Food is currency. Food is class. And a mysterious sushi chef named Jiro (Brian Tee, Chicago Med) is on a quest for vengeance.

Yes: Bourdain’s food-noir revenge comic, animated, at midnight, on the anime block. Somewhere this all makes perfect sense, and that somewhere has always been Williams Street.

Adult Swim President Michael Ouweleen, from the announcement:

“We at Adult Swim were huge fans of Bourdain and Rose’s graphic novels, so when our partners at WBA first mentioned it, we were all in. Like everything Bourdain did, this story starts with food and then generously reaches out into all directions to cover culture, obsession, and what makes humanity problematic, but in the end, inspiring. What you get is a wildly original, cinematic series, the kind of thing that we feel is right at home on Adult Swim.”

The cast around Tee is quietly stacked: Titus Welliver (Bosch: Legacy), Alison Pill (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), and Justin Kirk (Weeds). The series is developed by Alessandro Tanaka and Brian Gatewood, who executive produce alongside Jordan Blum and Sam Register.

One more date for the calendar: NYCC attendees get a Get Jiro screening and panel on Saturday, October 10 at the Javits (Room North-409), a week after the premiere… which means the con crowd gets to arrive with opinions. We’ll be paying attention to that one.

Get Jiro premieres Saturday, October 3 at midnight ET/PT on Adult Swim, streaming next day on HBO Max.
