On this Throwback Thursday as well as 4 years this week, I’d like to take time to reflect upon one of central’s biggest accomplishments thusfar:
I remember it like it was yesterday, I’d been watching an online 24 hour marathon based on Red Nose Day (a.k.a.: Comic Relief in the UK) where US folks got together with celebrities and other silly nonsense to raise money. As with everything that goes on throughout the internet, I said to myself “I can probably do this.” It seemed like all the stars were aligned… we had 1) The internet (duh), 2) A reason for charity: Cancer. For one, we lost our friend and Aqua Teen Central contributor, Jeremiah/yousorrymon to cancer earlier in the year. Also, my father had passed the year before from throat cancer. It so happened that April is Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Month. 3) A Facebook full of [adult swim] talent, creators, etc. which I sucked up the courage to ask if they would be willing to contribute in one form or another.
3 weeks after planning, using 2 desktop PCs and a labtop to stream a commentary over Skype as well as UStream with endless amounts of comedic and animated content (most of which was provided by people who work(ed) for/on Swim programs), we were go. We ultimately raised over $1,100 in the name of Head and Neck Cancer Awareness. While it doesn’t sound like a terrible lot, for our first crack at a charity, and 12 hours worth of entertainment… not bad by any means.

Will we ever do another Swim Against Cancer? Maybe, if I have time/motivation. Back when I did the first 2, I was unemployed and full of hopes and dreams. Hopefully if I do, it will be reminiscent of this original Swim Against and certainly not the semi-trainwreck that was Swim Against Cancer 2.
