After the shocking season 4 finale of Metalocalypse, the path was laid open for more stories to be told, but will they all be told by Brendon Small? Recent comments leave questions about the future of the show and his role in it.
Season 4 of Metalocalypse concluded with an epic cliff-hanger. It gave answers to some of the questions that fans have spent years discussing and speculating on in forums, chat rooms and social media sites. Dethklok finally learned about the prophecy of the ‘Metalocalypse’ and the role they are destined to play in this ‘end of the world’ scenario. Meanwhile, the audience learns a bit more about Selatcia, The Falconback Project and are introduced to the Church of the Black Klok. As if that wasn’t enough, following an attack by the Metal Masked Assassin, Toki is literally stabbed in the back by his predecessor and supposed friend, ex-Dethklok guitarist, Magnus Hammersmith. The stage is set, but for what exactly?
In a couple of recent interviews, Small was asked about the future of the show. His comments were brief but leave many questions. When asked by The Aquarian Weekly if the show would continue, he responded:
“Oh yeah, I’ve got more of the story to tell. I don’t think it’s going to be a bunch of quarter hours or half hours. I’m trying to go for a longer amount of time to tell the next part of the story. We’ll see what the network comes back with.”
Clearly he wants to continue the show, but it doesn’t sound likely to continue in it’s present form. Could he be talking about a movie or possibly a special mini-series? Either way, any Metalocalypse is still better than no Metalocalypse, right? Before you answer that, consider his comments in an even more recent article on MLIve.com.
“I’ve got more stories to tell, which would pick up with the frame right after the finale,”
“It could potentially continue (without me) after that.”
This opens up a whole new can of hellfire. Obviously this is going to ruffle the feathers of Metalocalypse’s dedicated fan base. After all, Brendon Small not only co-created the show, but he voices many of the key characters, including Nathan Explosion, Skwisgaar, Pickles and Charles Ofdensen. He’s the primary creative force behind the writing of the show and composes/performs the show’s spectacular music. It’s hard to imagine how Metalocalypse could continue without him and if it would even be worth watching. Hopefully I’m just a fan girl jumping to conclusions here, but it’s hard to read that any other way.
