Finally getting around to our recaps from NYCC… here’s the first of three:
On Friday, October 8th, 2010, for the first time ever at New York ComicCon, [ adult swim] held their first panel for its newest live-action show, Childrens’ Hospital. On the panel itself, stars Rob Huebel (Dr. Owen Maestro,) Rob Corddry (Dr. Blake Downs,) Erin Hayes (Dr. Lola Spratt,) and producer Jon Stern. Rob Huebel also served as kind of a moderator for the panel (in years previous, NYCC [as] panels have either been moderated by VP in Charge of Programming, Keith Crofford, or Ken Plume from ASiteCalledFred.com.)
In addition, two “new” episodes (they were new at the time) were aired: “The Coffee Machine Paid For Itself” with guest David Wain (The State, CH Producer) and “Show Me on Montana” with guests Lizzy Caplan (True Blood, Hot Tub Time Machine) and Steve Agee (The Sarah Silverman Program.)
Here are some of the highlights and questions from the panel:
• Corddry tells us that the inspiration for Childrens’ Hospital came from visiting an actual Childrens’ Hospital… after breaking his daughter’s arm.
• Someone from CNN.com’s IReport asked why the show was on Cartoon Network (My note: I found this to be a rather dumb question, considering CNN and CN/[as] are both owned by Turner) Corddry responded with a joke about Rick Sanchez who had just been fired from CNN.
• Fans who walked up to the podium were “allowed” to plug their own blogs, websites, etc.
• Someone asked what each of the casts’ inspirations were. Corddry responded with a multitude of “Jesi” including Jesus, Baby Jesus, and Middle-Aged Jesus.
• The typical “Genius” asked the cast how he could get his show on [ adult swim]. Meh.
• Corddry says the entire cast from both Seasons One and Two will be returning. Including Lake Bell (Dr. Kat Black) who died at the beginning of Season Two.
• Someone asked why [as] and not Comedy Central? The answer: Because [as]’s 15 minute format works for their jokes. Jokes can only be so long.
• Another Behind the Scenes of Childrens’ Hospital is planned for Season Three.
• Rob Huebel and Paul Scheer (Human Giant, The League) are developing a spin-off for National Terrorism Strike Force: San Diego: Sport Utility Vehicle.
• A gentleman in a mask screamed that he was from the future. To which Corddry yelled back, “security!”
• A “blooper reel” was shown at the end of the panel… it was made up of actual surgeries.
