Adult Swim Games has a huge mass of games to play on iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad, all 99 cents, none of which include Adult Swim characters. All of them are totally original mobile games, with totally original art and characters developed by companies like Pik Pok.
Cartoon Network, though, has a significantly smaller group of games in iOS. Or any platform, for that matter. Android sees no CN games– only an official CN Video app. But what iOS gets, in comparison to the far larger showcase of games Adult Swim provides, is a bunch of games starring Cartoon Network characters. There’s a Generator Rex game, a game named Flight of the Hamsters that stars the hamsters that provide the Kids Next Door with power (and the treehouse can be seen in-game). There’s a CN app with video (including LIVE TV, which is amazing and which is also something the Adult Swim apps should get around to providing. CN has begun offering live TV streams on their website as well, it’s a good move for the kids network), and an Adventure Time photo editing app with stamps and backgrounds.
But, importantly, at least for the sake of this article, there’s an Adventure Time point and click adventure game, and a Regular Show zombie-killing game. One based directly on an episode of the show, one an original story made for the game. First, let’s check out Regular Show: Nightmare-athon.
Regular Show: Nightmare-athon is a game where you kill zombies. Basic. You control Mordecai, going up and down on the screen as wave after wave of zombies heads your way, attempting to attack those in the crowd behind you. The game’s based on the Regular Show episode “Grave Sights”, where Mordecai and Rigby host a horror movie night in order to pay for park damages, which of course goes awry, when Rigby breaks the tape and suddenly wakes up the dead.
In the game, you move Mordecai and Rigby up and down your screen while taking aim at the zombies coming towards you. When you’ve targeted them, they’re circled and a tap on the screen launches a ball at the zombie, knocking them out. More points for hitting two or more, of course, and the waves keep going until you let them waltz right past you and into the terrified crowd. Try to beat your high score– see how many nights in a row you can keep going.
There’s a gauge at the top of the screen in between the time and pause button that fills while playing and eventually begins flashing. Swipe when it does, and Rigby uses his stick and whacks as many zombies as he can until he gets too tired to do more. He also picks up the odd powerup lying around on the ground when you do set him off– javelins for him to hold and skewer zombie heads with, discuses for Mordecai to throw and saw off zombie heads– lots to do with zombie heads.
The game recently updated with a few new additions and an improvement or two. Prior to the update the other day, you could only control Mordecai via tilting the device. It would calibrate your device before sending out your first wave of zombies, and it worked, to an extent– but it also didn’t. If that makes sense. Calibrate it slightly wrong and you needed to tilt the iPod at bizarre angles to get anything moving. Sometimes, calibrate it correctly, and experience the same issue. Now, after the update, there’s an option for a touch and slide control, which is significantly better to play with, since it gives you far better control of Mordecai’s movement, and it’s harder to blame that one zombie slipping by on your crappy accelerometer, and more realistic to blame yourself for a mental slip-up.
They also added new powerups. Besides the simple javelin or discus, you can also call on your friends from the show for help– Muscle Man and High-Five Ghost show off their basketball skills and beat the zombies with ‘em, Pops has a poetry slam and blows them away, and Benson gets real mad and blows fireballs. All true to character, of course.
The game is fun, and is significantly better than it was before the recent update. More playable, more fun, and there’s more of the show in there than there was before. It’s 99 cents on the App Store, so if you have a love for Regular Show and want to check this out for cheap-o, go nab it for your device here on the Store.
Adventure Time: Legends of Ooois a point-and-click adventure game. It’s an original story and it’s super cool to anyone who calls themselves a fan of Adventure Time.
The Big Hollow Princess is the story that comes in the iOS game. In this, the Ice King has frozen Hot Dog Princess, Slime Princess, and Princess Bubblegum in one of his bids to gain a princess as his own. So, of course, it’s up to Finn & Jake to release each one of them from their present icy hell and make the Ice King pay for what he’s done.
The game sends you walking around Ooo, solving really basic scavenger-hunt-type puzzles, where you need to get a scarf for Choose Goose, wool for Tree Trunks, and put together a fake princess to fool Ice King with. Just like in the show, there are hidden snails all over, and picking them up gives you an extra hint each time. Sometimes, those come in handy.
The dialogue in the game is nice, and pretty on-par with the television show. Several
characters make appearances: Starchy has become a mailman and needs some help, Lumpy Space Princess needs some cans and stuff to turn in for food money. Finn and Jake themselves actually have voices, with their lines voiced over by Jeremy Shada and John DiMaggio. Which is very cool. Everyone gives you something that helps save the princesses, as you need specific items and methods to get the princesses out of the ice in which they preside– Slime Princess, for example, has been turned into ice cubes, and you need to retrieve the scattered cubes to put her back together. Bubblegum is now a popsicle, and you need warmth to get her out. And also the ability to lick.
The game is fun, and it costs 99 cents in the App Store, and if you love Adventure Time, it’s worth a pick up. But I’m not entirely sure it’s worth the price tag right now– the game only includes the Big Hollow Princess story, which is actually super short. I bought the game yesterday and finished the entire story in around 15 minutes, give or take a few. There aren’t even any to purchase in-app yet. Hopefully, future updates will include new stories, because it could use some more. It’s a good game, it’s fun, and it’s Adventure Time, so there’s really not a whole lot going wrong. It just needs some more content to be totally worth its price tag. It needs more so there’s more to do, so you spend more time in it. Hopefully they’ll buff it up soon.
But for now, check it out for 99 cents on the App Store. If you’re an Adventure Time fan, this is worth the money no matter what. Check it out right here.
Go buy some Cartoon Network games! Maybe they’ll put some more out! More fun!
