The Adult Swim block Toonami has just announced a new show for their line up. Well, it’s not really a new show but new episodes will be made. Late last year the action block announced it was making whole new sequel episodes of the former Cartoon Network show Samurai Jack with original creator, Genndy Tartakovsky, on board for the project. Earlier today, it was announced by VP/Creative Director of Adult Swim and Toonami, Jason DeMarco, that the hit anime OVA FLCL or Fooly Cooly will not only be getting new episodes but that they will co-produce with Production I.G. who created the original 6 episode series with Gainax.  Based on the announcement, they will be creating 12 new episodes which will be sequels to the OVA and be split into two seasons. FLCL originally came out in 2000, aired on Adult Swim in 2003, and again on Toonami in 2013. It’s also currently available to watch on Funimation, Hulu, and iTunes.

For those of you who don’t know what FLCL is, here is a summary of the plot:

Naota Nanbada is a boring young boy who leads a boring life in a boring town. His older brother has left for America, and the closest he comes to any excitement is when his deadbeat dad has too much sake. But things change one day when a bizarre girl zooms up to him on a scooter and smacks him in the face with her guitar. What’s more, once Naoto returns home he discovers that this strange woman has arrived ahead of him and moved in! Not only does she constantly engage in perverted activities with Naota’s father and flirt with the young man himself, but she also claims to be an alien who is searching for the ‘Pirate King.’ Now, Naota must learn to live with this new intruder, deal with an odd government agent who sports exceptionally large eyebrows and the mysterious Medical Mechanica, and come to terms with the fact that there are a variety of robots and weapons emerging out of his head – amongst other things. Perhaps boring wasn’t so bad after all…(via anime-planet.com)

DeMarco also provided some plot details on his Twitter which included a set premiere time frame for the series.

I don’t know how they will continue just a great series but I’m hoping for the best for them as a fan of both FLCL and Toonami. It would be great to see what all these characters have been up to after all this time. What are your thoughts of this news? Do you think Toonami can continue where the original left off?
