Remembering George Lowe (aka Space Ghost)

0 172

There are some that say death is just another part of life. It’s not something you think of fondly, at least not until someone is gone and then you remember them through memories. Today, the Adult Swim universe has learned that the Space Man has gone home… George Lowe, the legendary voice of Space Ghost (on Coast to Coast), Brak’s Dad, and countless other characters on AS has passed at the age of 67. George was a legend and one of the pillars of Adult Swim from the very beginning, if not longer (SGC2C and Cartoon Planet predate Adult Swim). As I’ve always said, Space Ghost was the “granddaddy” of Adult Swim.

Just learned from one of his friends that George Lowe, voice of the titular character from Space Ghost: Coast to Coast, has died. R.I.P., George

According to Deadline, Lowe was born in Dunedin, Florida on November 10, 1957, and grew up in nearby Brooksville. His first radio gig came at age 15 when we worked for local station WWJB. In 1975, Lowe graduated out of Hernando High School and attended the Radio Engineering Institute of Sarasota as well as Pasco–Hernando Community College, clearly the former college experience landed him various radio gigs throughout Florida as well as the Atlanta area, including Superstation TBS on television.

Lowe’s first voice over gig was in 1991 for the animated series Beetlejuice as “Super Ego” in the episode “Super Zeroes,” and shortly after, in 1994 scored the role as everyone’s beloved galactic superhero-turned talk show host, Space Ghost, as well as on Cartoon Planet which ran from 1995-1998 on both Cartoon Network as well as the aforementioned TBS (where I first got a taste of SG and the crew).

The original run of the CtC aired from 1994 up until the end of 1999. When Adult Swim launched, the show was resurrected for a short stint from 2001 until 2004, as well as a short run on Turner Network’s GameTap gaming service shortly after. Besides that, Space Ghost would appear in various programs, commercials, etc. such as Perfect Hair Forever, Robot Chicken, The Brak Show, commercial breaks during 2012’s The Room (where he interviews Tommy Wiseau), and the first Aqua Teen Hunger Force movie. Suffice to say, Space Ghost alone is engrained in Adult Swim popular culture.

I’m sorry to share this, everybody. comicbook.com/anime/news/s…

Besides SG, you could hear Lowe in various shows (as well as commercials). I personally was surprised hearing him in a Lego ad that would run in the mid-2000s. Lowe lent his voice to shows such as Sealab 2021, Robot Chicken, American Dad, and as the patriarchal “Dad” (aka The Hump, aka The Condor) on The Brak Show.

Speaking of The Brak Show, it was here where George Lowe became a staple on this site/Swimcast. Jeff who worked on Aqua Teen Central started “The Dad Shrine” a site dedicated to Brak’s Dad, with info, downloads, etc. Jeff ended up reaching out to George Lowe and conducting an interview with him, eventually culminating in loaning his voice to intro/outro each episode of the Swimcast, which you can still hear to this day.

Though he’s left us physically, Lowe’s humor and quick wit will be remembered and celebrated for years to come.

Rest in Power, Sir.
