Welcome to Episode 101 of Punch Drunk TV. We wish we started the show off on a lighter note, but due to the unfortunate death of Anthony Bourdain, we do their best to unpack our own emotions regarding the man’s legacy and impact on the world, while also recalling some low points in our lives that led to some self-destructive actions. Mental illness, suicide, and the way the media and social media impacts these things are all touched on … and then 50 minutes in, the show gets into its normal groove.

Bare with us. It’s been a rough week.

NEWS HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK:

  • Anthony Bourdain died of suicide at the age of 61.
  • HBO has officially greenlit a “Game of Thrones” prequel series, set within the fabled time period the “Age of Heroes,” which will allegedly take place a thousand years before the show.
  • Aside from a third “Kingsman” movie and spinoff movie that’s in the works, Matthew Vaughn is developing an eight hour “Kingsman” TV spinoff series.
  • An “Aeon Flux” live-action TV reboot is in development at MTV.
  • The AT&T – Time Warner Merger has been approved.
  • David Simon, who was banned from Twitter for a day because he told someone to “drop dead” says his next HBO show, which is a Capital Hill-set drama, has been in limbo for three years, thanks to Donald Trump. Details, here:

Punch Drunk TV 98: Who’ll Watch The Watchmen? https://adultswimcentral.com/2018/05/26/punch-drunk-tv-98-wholl-watch-the-watchmen/ Sat, 26 May 2018 14:14:44 +0000 http://acpnet.net/?p=1125542

It’s that time again. Episode 98 of Punch Drunk TV is here and we start off with an apology from Aaron who clarifies his stance on the legality and morality of raping and murdering robots in Westworld. Because, for some reason, last week he just couldn’t communicate his argument properly. Also, the whiskey … it be strong.

It’s Memorial Day Weekend, what are you all doing? Besides listening to this new episode, of course…?

NEWS HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK:

  • Damon Lindelof says his “Watchmen” series will not be an adaptation of the comics or a sequel to the movie, instead saying, it’ll be “a remix.” Via The Hollywood Reporter, Lindelof says, “Those original twelve issues are our Old Testament. When the New Testament came along, it did not erase what came before it. Creation. The Garden of Eden. Abraham and Isaac. The Flood. It all happened. And so it will be with Watchmen. The Comedian died. Dan and Laurie fell in love. Ozymandias saved the world and Dr. Manhattan left it just after blowing Rorschach to pieces in the bitter cold of Antarctica. To be clear. Watchmen is canon.”
  • Netflix has canceled their “Arrested Development” press tour in the UK following backlash against Jeffrey Tambor.
  • Barack and Michelle Obama have inked a multi-year production deal with Netflix where they will be creating new documentaries, docu-series, feature-length movies, and other types of content.
  • Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis — the co-showrunners of ABC’s “Once Upon a Time” — have replaced Bryan Fuller as the new showrunners for Apple’s “Amazing Stories.”
  • FOX and WWE are close to a five-year $1-billion dollar deal to bring Smackdown to the network. Raw will stay on USA.
  • After being canceled by SYFY, “The Expanse” has been rescued by Amazon
  • “Krypton” has been renewed at SYFY for a second season
  • “Step Up: High Water” renewed for a second season at YouTube Red
  • FX has renewed “Baskets” for a fourth season
  • Mark Wahlberg is currently in the process of bringing back the children’s educational TV series “Captain Kangaroo” with his non-scripted production company Unrealistic Ideas. “We are bringing back a cool STEM scientist as Captain Kangaroo,” he said. There are no other details about the series or where it’ll air at this time.
  • There’s a new “Thundercats” series on the way, called “Thundercats Roar,” and some fans are really unhappy about the new show’s silly aesthetic.

AARON’S LOSERS: “Fahrenheit 451” and “13 Reasons Why”JACK’S LOSERS: “Evil Genius” and “Rea(L)over” AARON’S FENCERS: “The Royal Wedding Live with Cord and Tish,” “13 Reasons Why: Beyond the Reasons,” “The Final Year” and “McMafia”JACK’S FENCERS: “Saturday Night Live” finale w/ Tina Fey, “Scijinks,” “The Split” and “Royal Wedding Live with Cord & Tish” AARON’S WINNERS: “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” “Westworld” and “The Handmaid’s Tale”JACK’S WINNERS: “Mob Psycho 100,” “Terrace House: Opening New Doors,” “The Handmaid’s Tale” and “Westworld”

Punch Drunk TV Ep. 97: Stiffler Weapon https://adultswimcentral.com/2018/05/18/punch-drunk-tv-ep-97-stiffler-weapon/ Sat, 19 May 2018 00:22:47 +0000 http://acpnet.net/?p=1125530

We’re now at that weird time between show seasons. With Summer shows around the corner and most shows coming to an end, what sorta batshit crazy things are we going to be watching over the next month? That is the question.

In the meantime, The Network UpFronts are done and it seems that the Red Wedding has come to Fox. The network almost killed all of their comedies. But at least Stiffler is coming to “Lethal Weapon” … right?

NEWS HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK:

  • Clayne Crawford has been replaced by Seann William Scott for Season 3 of “Lethal Weapon.” It’s unclear what will happen to Riggs in the story, but Scott will come in as a new unruly cop character for Damon Wayans’ Murtaugh to team up with.
  • Will Ferrell and Molly Shannon will return as Cord and Tish to cover the Royal Wedding on HBO. It’s titled “The Royal Wedding Live with Cord and Tish!” and will premiere May 19 at 7:30 pm.
  • Jordan Peele will executive produce a new 10-episode nazi-hunting series for Amazon called “The Hunt.” Set in the 1970s, the series “starts from a vaguely real-world premise—former Nazis living undercover in New York—and quickly gets TV-show-over-the-top with it, suggesting that the “hundreds” of secret Germans are plotting the rise of a “Fourth Reich” in the heart of the Big Apple.”
  • According to Entertainment Weekly, “Arrested Development’s” 16-episode fifth season will be split into two halves, with one premiering May 29 and the other coming by the end of the year.
  • Netflix is getting in on the horror anthology trend with a new series, “Guillermo del Toro Presents 10 After Midnight.” According to Variety, Del Toro will serve as executive producer on the series, and reportedly wants to write and direct select “equally sophisticated and horrific” episodes himself; the rest will come from writers and filmmakers personally selected by the director.
  • “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” has been renewed for a sixth season.  According to AV Club, “the show will return for a 13-episode run next summer, most likely giving viewers a nice gap between the May release of Avengers 4 and the show’s season premiere. This way, half of the cast can still be obliterated and then resurrected without undercutting whatever the movie does to pull it off—which we’re all guessing involves time travel, right?”
  • Batwoman will make her debut in CW’s next Superhero crossover event. This will be the first time any of the “Arrow”-related shows will be making a direct connection to the Batman universe.
  • According to The Hollywood Reporter, Epix has just ordered 10 episodes of “Pennyworth,” a show dedicated to Batman’s butler Alfred when he first began working for Bruce Wayne’s father. The show will emphasize Alfred’s past as a former British SAS officer living in 1960s London, so it will be as far removed from the classic Batman mythology as possible.
  • DC Universe announced a new 13-episode live action series for the streaming service based on “Doom Patrol.” A press release from Warner Bros. says “Doom Patrol” will be about a team of super-powered people who have all been scarred and traumatized by various tragedies until someone known as The Chief comes along and enlists them in a mission to investigate ‘the weirdest phenomena in existence.'”

NOTEWORTHY CANCELLATIONS:Syfy has canceled “The Expanse.”CBS: “Kevin Can Wait,” “Scorpion,” “Superior Donuts” NBC: “Great News,” “Rise,” “Taken” ABC: “Alex, Inc.,” “The Crossing,” “Deception,” “Designated Survivor,” “Quantico,” “Kevin (Probably) Saves the World,” “Marvel’s Inhumans”FOX: “The Exorcist,” “Lucifer,” “The X-Files” (but there’ll be more “Prison Break,” apparently?)

ABC also passed on “The Greatest American Hero” reboot. The CW canceled their “Supernatural” spinoff series “The Wayward Sisters.” “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” was saved from cancellation by NBC, and Fox has resurrected Tim Allen’s “Last Man Standing” after canceling practically all its comedies because “The Roseanne Effect” and … football?

AARON’S LOSER: “Patrick Melrose”JACK’S LOSERS: “Safe” AARON’S FENCERS: “Evil Genius” and “I’m Dying Up Here”JACK’S FENCERS: “All Night,” “Evil Genius,” “Patrick Melrose” AARON’S WINNERS: “Dear White People,” “Westworld,” “Barry” and “Killing Eve”JACK’S WINNERS: “Barry,” “Westworld,” “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “Ali Wong: Hard Knock Wife” and Little Women”

Punch Drunk TV Ep. 89: Everything but Jessica Jones https://adultswimcentral.com/2018/03/14/punch-drunk-tv-ep-89-everything-but-jessica-jones/ Wed, 14 Mar 2018 23:03:42 +0000 http://acpnet.net/?p=1125380 [waveplayer url=”http://traffic.libsyn.com/punchdrunktv/punch-drunk-tv-89-20180308.mp3″]

In Episode 89 of Punch Drunk TV, Jack and Aaron discuss a very important topic: Their rekindled Tori Amos fandoms. Seriously, it’s overtaken everything … but only ’90s Tori.

NEWS HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK:

  • Barack and Michelle Obama are in early talks with Netflix to produce a new global series for the platform. The deal is said to be focused on a series that would highlight inspirational stories, not anything to serve as a direct rebuttal to current President Donald Trump or his policies.
  • Bronson Pinchot, aka Balki from “Perfect Strangers,” has been cast as a recurring character in Netflix’s “Sabrina” series. Pinchot will recur as George Hawthorne, “Baxter High’s villainous, puritanical principal. He is a constant thorn in Sabrina’s side and is always trying to thwart her escapades.”
  • Disney Jr is working on a new “Rocketeer” animated series. This time, the story will follow Kit: “a young girl who receives a surprise package on her birthday revealing she’s next in line to become the Rocketeer, a legendary superhero who has the ability to fly with the help of a rocket-powered jetpack.” Assisting Kit with her adventures will be “her gadget-minded best friend, Tesh, and airplane mechanic uncle, Ambrose.”
  • Jon Favreau has been tapped to write and executive produce a live-action “Star Wars” TV series that’ll air exclusively on Disney’s yet-to-launch standalone streaming service
  • 26.5 million people tuned in to the Oscars on Sunday, making it the lowest rated event in the awards show’s history.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK: Do the Oscars still matter?

It’s the first episode of December which means, it’s time for eggnog and matzahs! We’re back from Thanksgiving break, Y’all, and Jack enjoyed turning 25 years old again. He catches us up on his birthday shenanigans.

Then we talk a bit about the best video games based on TV shows. Aside from “South Park,” which games would you choose? And while we’re on the topic, which TV show should have its own video game? You know, aside from Anthony Bourdain …

NEWS HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK:

  • Lennie James is leaving “The Walking Dead” and going to “Fear the Walking Dead.” Morgan Jones will become a series regular in the spinoff which is cool, but makes absolutely no sense unless the show will have a time jump in its next season.
  • “Supergirl” nearly doubled its ratings as CW kicked off its annual DC crossover event, bringing in 2.7 million viewers on Monday
  • Netflix has renewed “MST3K: The Return” for another season which will hit the streaming service in the “not-too-distant future,” according to Netflix.
  • Amid sexual harassment allegations against Jeremy Piven, CBS has canceled “Wisdom of the Crowd.”
  • MTV has greenlit “Jersey Shore Vacation,” reuniting the original cast of The Jersey Shore for a new series. It’ll premiere sometime in 2018 and comes from the same person behind the network’s other new reality series, “Floribama Shore.”
  • Will Ferrell and Molly Shannon will host live coverage of the Rose Parade in an Amazon Prime Video live stream, presented by Funny or Die. According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Ferrell and Shannon will emcee the special in-character as Cord Hosenbeck and Tish Cattigan, fictional local TV hosts who have covered the annual event for the past 25 years.”

Hey look, the first episode of Punch Drunk TV has arrived. For those of you familiar with our previous podcast, Pass The Effin’ Remote, you’ll notice not much has really changed. However, if you’re new to the world that is Jack and Aaron drinking about television…welcome to the party, pal!

This past week brought the return of a lot of new programs to network TV as well as a bunch of new shows we both loved and really really disliked. But first, here are the NEWS HIGHLIGHTS of the week:

AMC will premiere its new 16-episode Fear The Walking Dead web-series online — which takes place on an airplane — this weekend and will thusly air each one minute clip during the commercial break of each new episode of The Walking Dead this season. AMC will not be letting Seth Rogen use the “F” word in his Preacher series which makes us wonder how watered down the show will be. Netflix has picked up a new 12-episode season of Black Mirror. HBO allegedly made the background actors for Westworld agree to a consent form warning of all sorts of crazy sexual behavior including forming a table shape while nude. The villain Flamingo, from Grant Morrison’s Batman and Robin, will be coming to Gotham later this year. Jon Hamm will play a fishy ad executive named “Don Grouper” on a new episode of Spongebob Square Pants. It looks like Waylon Smithers is finally coming out of the closet in this season of The Simpsons. A new version of The A-Team is in development with a producer from the Fast and Furious franchise and the daughter of Stephen J. Cannell. Nicki Minaj is developing a sitcom inspired by her life over at ABC Family. And finally, there’s a petition going around calling for Parts Unknown with Anthony Bourdain to be taken off the air due to its “Grand Guignol of gore” involving how animals.
