There are few classic films that are globally adored, let alone marketed in an infinite amount of ways. Back to the Future is one such movie. From toys to video games (the Telltale one at least, don’t even bother with the NES or Genesis ones), to memorabilia, even an ice cube tray that may or may not be chilling ice in my freezer at this very moment. Heck, there’s even a silly little podcast around the internet that dissects the movies, etc.

With BTTF’s 30th coming up in 11 months, there’s a lot of hope for things we saw in the second film including (of course) a working version of the hoverboard (one that Mattel put out a not-so-exact replica of early last year). With endless opportunities to push the franchise, nothing could be as unexpected as what was just announced… a Back to the Future musical.

Back to the Future 2

On the heels of the eventual Broadway debut of “Rocky” (still not sure how that’s a musical, but whatevs), Back to the Future creators Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale, along with Universal Stage Productions (the folks behind Wicked and Billy Elliott), have teamed with producer Colin Ingram (Ghost: The Musical) and a cavalcade of others – including composer of the BTTF trilogy Alan Silvestri – to bring the musical to West End, London. Of course, music from Huey Lewis and Chuck Berry will also be incorporated into the stage production.

Co-creator Bob Gale has been planning the musical for at least the last decade: “Now actually what Bob [Zemeckis] and I’ve talked about — we can’t do it because we don’t know how to do this kind of thing — but you know how they bring back movies as Broadway musicals?” The whole concept sounds amazing, and what with the slew of movie-adapted musicals, this could bring a whole new spin to the legend of Marty McFly and Doctor Emmett L. Brown.

I’m just really hoping it makes its way to Broadway. I’ll be the first in line.
