It’s always nice to have some breaking Toonami news, isn’t it?
Anime Boston is going on right now, and at Aniplex of America’s panel, they made the announcement that A-1 Pictures’ fantasy action anime Sword Art Online will be premiering on Toonami come August. The announcement was later confirmed by Toonami over on the official Tumblr account.
Not much is known yet about the airing, no time slot, nothing but the information that it’ll air in August. No news on what it will replace yet.
The show is based off a series of light novels by Reki Kawahara, and follows skilled player Kirito, his friend and love interest Asuna, and a group of players of a popular Virtual Reality MMORPG that uses something called Nerve Gear to let the players truly control their characters’ minds and actions using the players’ own five senses, who sign in one day to find that they’re not allowed to sign back out. They’re informed that if they ever want to stop playing, they need to reach the peak of the game and defeat the final boss, but they need to be careful because if they die in the game, they die in real life.
The show aired from July 7th to December 22nd, 2012 in Japan, running for a total of 25 episodes. According to Anime News Network, the English cast includes Bryce Papenbrook as Kirito, Cherami Leigh as Asuna, Cassandra Lee as Leafa, Christine Marie Cabanos as Silica, Sarah Williams as Lisbeth, and Patrick Seitz as Agil. Along with airing the show on Adult Swim, Aniplex will also be releasing the show on Blu-ray and DVD in four different sets shipping throughout the rest of the year. They’ll be available in the coming months for preorder on RightStuf and Aniplex of America’s website.
The show will air in August. When we know more, like exactly what show it will replace, we’ll let you know everything.
SAO, this summer. Only on Toonami.
